Junior Boys Bullets start the year with auspicious win over Hougang Sec

28th Jan 2014

C Div Boys listening attentively at the pre-match briefing

It was not the most fluent performance and a little jittery at that, but the junior Bowen Bullets turned out 3-nil winners over their first opponent in the North Zone Inter-School C Division Boys Football Championship, Hougang Sec this afternoon at the Punggol Secondary School field.

As early as the 9th min, left winger Muhd Irfan calmed the Bullets' nerves with a goal by tapping in a cross from the right. If the Bullets were expecting the floodgates to open then, they were very wrong as Hougang Sec put up a good fight, coming close to securing an equaliser, with one of their efforts ruled out for offside. Hougang's towering captain, playing in the middle of the park, commanded the midfield well and came to constant duels with Bullets midfielder Muhd Zamani.

But Hougang's spirit broke late in the second half when Bullets striker Brandon Tan doubled the scoreline. A throw-in from the left somehow eluded 2 defenders and the goalkeeper to fall nicely for Brandon to tap into an empty net. As the resistance softened, Bowen capitalised through a Muhd Zamani's grounder into the bottom left corner of Hougang's goalmouth.

Junior Bullets giving a resounding cheer

The win was good tonic for the team but there is much improvement to be made before facing tournament favourites Singapore Sports School next Tuesday, one of which is the quickness in the transition from attack to defence. The gaps in midfield left by the Bullets when they lost the ball were seldom capitalised by the Hougang boys but a well-drilled Sports School team will not need a second invitation to do damage.
