Bowen B Boys go top with 3-0 win over Greendale

27th Jan 2016

After 2 games into the North Zone B Div Boys Inter-School Group C Football match, Bowen Bullets sit atop the group table with 2 wins out of 2. The boys overcame Greendale Secondary School 3-0 this afternoon with all 3 goals coming in the second half.

Greendale Sec were aware of the Bullets' scoring prowess and evidently came with a game plan to frustrate their opponents. Playing a counter-attacking game, the green jersey boys were content to sit back and let Bowen do all the attacking. They were disciplined and formed up 3 layers of defence in front of their goal. The Bullets found it hard to break through and hit the crossbar 3 times before the end of the 1st half.

Greendale gave the Bullets a scare 2 minutes from the interval when their main striker escaped his markers and latched on to a defensive clearance. Approaching on goal to face Bullets goalkeeper Desmond Ong, he could only knock the ball into the legs of Bowen keeper.

Bowen adjusted to a 4-4-2 formation in the 2nd half with striker Aizal dropping down to midfield and allowing Josiah to partner Zamani up front for a two-pronged attack. The change paid dividends soon enough Greendale defence let in Bullets centre-back Muhd Tahalif behind the defence line and he coolly lifted the ball over the Greendale goalkeeper to open accounts.

With their concentration broken, Bullets midfielder Josiah caused more mayhem in the opposition's penalty box, bulldozing his way into the Greendale penalty box in the 61st minute and sneaking the ball past the Greendale custodian at his near post.

Four minutes later, Bullets striker Aizal completed the scoring with a low curler that flew into the Greendale goal.

Bowen teacher-in-charge was happy with the 3 points earned but felt the boys should have shown more patience in their build-up play.

"The boys put in the effort and they deserve the victory today. However, we could have reacted better when we encounter teams that are trying to soak up the action. We will have to work on being patient and playing sensibly, and not getting frustrated by the opponents. We are also prone to losing concentration at the back and that could have been disastrous today if Greendale had scored first with their only real chance of the game."

Bowen B Boys start 2016 with a bang

20th Jan 2016

Captain Benny Tan leading the Bullets in the warm-up

The B Div Boys from Bowen Secondary school ripped the heart out of a despondent Si Ling Sec side in a North Zone Inter-School B Div Boys football match yesterday at Punggol Sec School field, winning by a hefty margin of 9-0.

Right from the referee's whistle, the Bowen Bullets burst into life, pressing their opponents and winning possession high up the pitch. Bullets striker Aizal had his first shot at goal come off the crossbar and later had a goal disallowed for offside in the first 15 minutes. But nothing could deny him in the 26th minute when he bulldozed his way into the 12-yard area and unleashed a grounder from close range past the Si Ling goalkeeper.

The goal settled the nerves of the Bullets and they began to take control of the game. In the 35th min, Bullets midfielder Josiah chipped a long ball behind the Si Ling backline for striker Zamani to run onto. Clear on goal, last season's top scorer for Bowen made no mistake in slotting the ball into the goalmouth for a 2-0 lead.

Not long after, Aizal got his second goal with a deceptive shot from outside the penalty box that sneaked past the goalkeeper at the right goalpost.

The second half started in the same vein as the first ended, with the Bullets dictating play and asking all the questions. In the 51st min, Zamani latched on to a through ball and blasted it for an unassailable 4-goal lead.

By this time, Si Ling Sec had given up the fight with both their goalkeeper, and later their second choice keeper, retiring due to injuries and taking no more part in the match. The replacement goalkeeper suffered considerably, conceding poor goals in the 54th min (Muhd Irfan), 61st min (Aizal) and the 70th min (Josiah). Substitute striker for Bowen David Sanjay then came on to add two more goals (72th and 76th min) to wrap up a satisfying afternoon of dominance on the pitch.
