Bowen Bullets rule the roost at Naval Base

26th Jan 2015

The senior Bowen Bullets made amends for their first-match loss in the Inter-Schools B Div Boys Football Competition by posting a convincing 4-0 victory over Naval Base Secondary School at the home of their opponents.

The Bullets managed to resolve some of the defensive issues from last week but still suffered some nervous moments at the back. Nevertheless, they were definitely more assured in their attacking moves, especially after skipper Muhd Danial gave the Bullets a 1-0 lead in the 21st minute, courtesy of an assist from midfielder Aloysius Lee.

Danial scored again 3 minutes into the second half, this time from the penalty spot, after striker Josiah Phua made an incisive run into the penalty box and was knocked off his feet.

Josiah himself got into the scoring act in the 56th minute when he cut in from the right and side-footed a rising shot across the Naval Base goalkeeper with his left foot into goal.

By this time, the Bowen team was cruising to the final whistle although Naval Base showed good spirits to maintain their intensity right to the end the match. 10 minutes before the final whistle, substitute Markus Lam showed good tenacity to beat his marker on the left and crossed the ball from the bye line to Josiah to complete the rout.

First match jitters left Bowen Bullets undone

The B Div Boys from the Bowen Bullets suffered a damaging 3-0 defeat at the hands of their bogey team, Woodgrove Secondary School in their first match of the North Zone Inter-Schools Football Competition this afternoon at the home ground of their opponent.

The Bullets could not overcome their first match jitters and were in sixes and sevens when they conceded the first goal to Woodgrove in the very first minute of the match. Almost the whole Bullets defence was left stranded as Woodgrove poured forward, leaving stand-in goalkeeper Aden Kuo with little cover. After the goal, the Bullets continued to commit silly mistakes in their own half and were lucky to go into the break only a goal down.

What did not happen in the first half eventually materialised as Woodgrove sensed the discomfort of the Bullets on natural turf. In the space of 12 minutes, Woodgrove scored 2 more goals, taking advantage of some loose marking and hesitant defending by the Bullets.

The Bullets tried to make amends but the few chances they created were well handled by the Woodgrove goalkeeper who put up a 5-star performance to shut out Bullets skipper Muhd Danial at set-pieces and a stiff shot from striker Josiah Phua.

The 3-0 scoreline was a shock to the Bullet system and they will have to find a way to resolve their defensive issues sooner than later if they want to have any chance of progressing to the next round.
