First game blues for C Div Bullets

2nd February 2017

The Junior boys from Bowen Secondary School tasted defeat in a close encounter with Woodlands Secondary School in the North Zone Inter-Schools Competition this afternoon at Lor Napiri falling 2-1 after going in front.

Both teams cancelled out each other in a tight game with few chances in the 1st half. The Bullets were too shy to shoot and Woodlands were making wayward passes in the attacking third.

But the game sprang to life in the 2nd half. A spirited attack by Bowen in the 38th minute resulted in a goalmouth melee which saw Bullets attacker Muhd Aadil having the last touch to punt the ball across the goal line for a 1-nil lead.

The celebration was shortlived as 4 minutes later, a free kick by Woodlands from the halfway line had the ball sailing over Bowen goalkeeper Koei who was left flapping at thin air as the ball found the top left-hand corner.

A 1-1 scoreline seemed like a fair result but Woodlands was given a golden opportunity to grab the winner in the 46th minute after Bullets centre-back Zed came out charging at the Woodlands right winger who tumbled inside the penalty box. The shoulder-to-shoulder contact seemed innocuous but the referee ruled for a foul and awarded Woodlands a penalty. Woodlands made no mistake with the spot kick.

The Bullets worked hard to get back in the game as they committed players higher up the field. In the 52nd minute, a header by Bullets centre-back Farihin from a corner kick drifted just over the crossbar. 4 minutes later, Bullets striker Muhd Ariffin also saw his free kick from the right sail over the goalmouth. It was the closest the Bullets came to an equaliser and Woodlands closed out the game with little fanfare.

Faultless performance makes Bullets favourites to top Group B

1st Feb 2017

It was billed as a re-match of a tumultuous clash between Spectra Sec and Bowen Sec in the C Divsion Boys Inter-Schools Competition 2 years ago when refereeing controversy dominated the match highlights. Now, both set of players meet again in the B Division and the Bowen Bullets came out tops by overcoming their rivals 2-1 at Lor Napiri.

The Bullets dominated possession right from the start and did not wait long to open accounts. Left-winger Mhd Zamani scored in the 3rd minute with an angled shot that sailed across the Spectra goalkeeper and into goal, assisted by teammate Aizal M.

In the 33rd minute, centre-back H. Aniq unleashed a thunderous shot that rocked the crossbar. Time stood still as everyone waited for the ball to find its way back to the ground. Fortunately for Spectra, the defence was first to react and cleared the ball for a corner.

The Bullets were launching diagonal balls to the flanks to Fareez and Zamani but finding no joy as they usually went out of play in a narrow field.

12 minutes after the break, the Bullets were awarded a free kick in the opponents' half as they seek to double the advantage. And this they did, courtesy of a free kick from Bullets skipper Muhd Tahalif. His swirling free kick towards goal was too much for the Spectra goalkeeper who only managed to palmed the ball into his own goalmouth.

The Bullets took their foot off the pedal with a 2-goal advantage as Spectra struggled to offer any real attacking threat. However, the Bowen boys were jerked back into reality in the 73rd minute. With a free kick from the halfway line, Spectra skipper lobbed the ball toward goal and caught the Bullets keeper Desmond Ong napping. The flight of the ball was misjudged by the Bullets custodian as it sailed over him and nestled in the back of the net. The goal seemed to send renewed energy into the Spectra players as they pressed forward for an equaliser.

But the Bullets' well-oiled engine managed to keep their opponents at bay until the final whistle for a well-deserved victory.
